About Alex' Work

“Alex de Wolf paints on location. That means he is intimately familiar with Amsterdam's ports. Perhaps Alex could be called a special sort of longshoreman! His work, acrylic on papier, shows a port being built. Cranes and scaffolding harmoniously share the port scene, which has a certain calm despite the building activity going on.

The seascapes of Terschelling, where Alex works, sometimes breathe a desolate atmosphere. De Wolf's paintings are not meant to be cheerful. Although his port scenes and landscapes might be called impressionistic, nevertheless there is a quality, characterized by a tension that, to my thinking, results from the fact that Alex' work explores the border between land and sea.

The tension and energy are reinforced stylisticly by somewhat turbulent brush strokes.”

From the opening remarks of Aad Meinderts at the 2004 Art Fair

“I paint what I observe, and always outdoors. The landscape must be literally tangible - in wind, in burning sun - this sharpens my concentration.
A sturdy grove of trees, deeply rooted in a field, that's my anchor.
Details in a landscape fascinate me, sometimes through variations of light, or an unexpected silhouette.”
